1- Exaggeration about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:

Amongst the forms of negligence that causes harm to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, goes against his guidance and call and rather goes against the basic principle which Allah, The Almighty, sent the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with i.e. At-Tawheeh (i.e. Islamic monotheism) is the exaggeration about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, raising him over the status of Prophethood, associating him with Allah, The Almighty, regarding the knowledge of Al-Ghayb (i.e. Unseen), or seeking help from him away from Allah, The Almighty, and taking oaths with him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, actually feared the occurrence of this and thus said while he was in the deathbed: “Do not exaggerate about me as was exaggerated about ‘Eesa (Jesus) ibn Maryam. Say: the slave of Allah and His Messenger.”

It is well known that the Christians worship along with Allah, The Almighty, ‘Eesa, may Allah exalted his mention, and call him the (Son). Exalted is He and high above what they say by great sublimity. Supplicating the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, away from Allah, The Almighty, is a kind of worship which can never be directed except to Allah, The Almighty, alone. Moreover, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against taking his grave as a place of festivity (which you visit repeatedly) saying: “Do not take my grave as a place of festivity and send blessings upon me for your greeting will reach me no matter where you are.”

Aversion against exaggeration about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, reached the extent that he, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed those who take the graves of their prophets as Masjids. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians, for they took the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.”  He, peace and blessings be upon him, was warning against what they had done.

When some people started to exaggerate about him, peace and blessings be upon him, saying: “You are our master and the son of our master. You are the best of us and the son of the best of us.” Upon this he, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the devil make you his agents.”’

Amongst the forms of exaggeration about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is taking oaths and swearing by him. It is a kind of glorification that cannot be directed except to Allah, The Almighty, alone. It was narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever swears an oath then let him swear by Allah or else keep silent.”

All of such Hadeeths stated in this section act as balance of justice that one should adopt and never go beyond them. Those who really seek only truth will find such texts enough knowledge. Allah is the Source of strength and success.

2- Neglecting Sending Peace and Blessing upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:

Amongst the other forms of negligence practiced towards the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is not sending peace and blessing upon him verbally and in writing, whenever he, peace and blessings be upon him, is mentioned. This is may occur in some of our gatherings. We hardly hear someone sending peace and blessing upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor do we hear someone remind us of this. This is really found on the level of societies and individuals alike. What stinginess can be worse than this stinginess? By this negligence, one does some matters that avail him nothing in his hereafter and worldly life.

Amongst them are the following:

1- The supplication of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, by saying: “May his nose be rubbed in the dust, a man in whose presence I am mentioned and he does not send blessings upon me.”

2- Having the characteristic of miserliness that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, expressed when he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned but he does not supplicate for me.”

3- Missing the doubled prayer from Allah, The Almighty, over him if one does not send peace and blessing upon the Prophet and his household. It was narrated that he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever sends blessings upon me, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold.”

4- Missing the prayer of Allah, The Almighty, and angels for abandoning mentioning the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. In this regard, Allah, The Almighty, Says (what means): {It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light…} [Quran 33: 43]

Such blessing that Allah, The Almighty, and His angels confer is a cause of bring out people from the darkness (of disbelief) to the light of (belief in Allah, The Almighty, alone). Actually, if one gets such blessing from Allah, The Almighty, and His angels, he surely will be brought out from the darkness to the light. What a great goodness one will get! What a great evil one is protected from! How regretful for those who are unmindful of their Lord! How great they lost from His virtue and goodness! Allah is the Source of strength)

Also, neglecting it makes the heart fearful and in terror for keeping away from Thikr. That is because the more one recites Thikr, the more his heart will get assured as Allah, The Almighty, Says (what means): {Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured."} [Quran 13: 28]

5- Missing the effects of sending peace and blessing upon the Prophet for those who do not send peace upon him such as removing distresses and attaining forgiveness.

There are different opinions regarding the ruling of sending peace and blessing upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, whenever he is mentioned; however, this is not the place to discuss them all.

And now what about the one who is more beloved to you than yourself, family and property when he is mentioned? And how will you praise him and supplicate Allah, The Almighty, for him?

Your image is usually in my mind, remembering you never leave my tongue, and your final end is in my heart, how can you be absent then?

Imam Ash-Shaafi‘i, may Allah have mercy upon him, said that he disliked for someone to say ‘the Messenger of Allah, but that one should say ‘The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his household, out of veneration for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”
