Fifthly, Referral for judgment must be made to the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:

Referral for judgment in all matters to the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, is one of the basic principles of loving and following the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Accordingly, faith cannot be valid for the one who does not refer for judgment in all matters to the legislating made by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and submit in full and willing submission. In this regard, Allah, The Almighty, Says (what means): {But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.} [Quran 4: 65]

He, The Exalted, also said: {It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.} [Quran 33: 36]

Allah, The Almighty, has explained that the signs of misguidance and hypocrisy include turning away from the Sunnah and rejecting referring judgment to it. Allah, The Almighty, Says (what means): {Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taaghoot [false judges] while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray. And when it is said to them: “Come to what Allaah has revealed and to the Messenger,” you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.} [Quran 4: 60-61]

Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "As for all who turns away from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his legislation, Allah, The Almighty, swore by Himself that they will not have sound faith until they are pleased with the judgment of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in all of their disputes regarding the matters of religion or worldly life and until  they find within themselves no discomfort from what he, peace and blessings be upon him, have judged."

Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, also said: "Allah, The Almighty, made turning away from what the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, came with and adopting something other than it is the real meaning of hypocrisy in much the same way as the real meaning of faith is referring to the judgment of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and having no discomfort within hearts because of his judgment and complete submission to what he has judged with all pleasure, willingness and love. This is the real meaning of faith and this turning away is the real meaning of hypocrisy."
