Episode 13: The woman in the social life of Prophet Mohammed peace and blessing be upon him 3/7

In order to recognize the place the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to women in his life, we trace some foundations taken from this daily life, the Statement he was keen to mention to his household, his wives and in gatherings with his companions. These foundations are as follows:

1-Love: 

The trustworthy messenger, peace be upon him, established this principle from the very beginning of his social life by saying: "In this world, women and perfume have been made dear to me, and made the joy of my eyes in prayer." And his life testifies to this statement through his marriage with Khadeejah (may Allah be pleased with her) and she was one of the most beloved people to him. She stood by his side, in support of his call, to the end of her life. Yet, her love stayed with him and he lived it daily, until he passed away. He would always make mention of her and her virtues. He honored Khadeejah's friends in dedication to her (may Allah be pleased with her). He said: "Bring glad-tidings to Khadeejah of a house in paradise, made up of straws of hollow pearls, wherein there will be no nuisance or fatigue."

Then, he continued in his love towards his other wives. The way he dealt with them on a daily basis is exemplary to the kind of true love, which should grow in every family, among couples and towards children. So he would eat with his wife in menstruation, drink of her cup and allow himself the enjoyment of her hard-work. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I used to drink from a cup while going through my periods, and share it with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who would place his mouth on the same spot my mouth was. I used to strip the bone off meat, during my periods and share it with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he would place his mouth on the same spot as mine."

The kind of love from the Messenger of the nation towards his wives (may Allah be pleased with them), causes resentment in the hearts of some. They are the people who have hearts that are sealed so they can't see clearly. Instead, they wish to hide reality and cause confusion about the true image of women in Islam, and in the life of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).

2- Justice

This pillar was nonexistent during the pagan era. So it was established by the coming of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He lifted the oppression suffered by women at the hands of men. The woman was not allowed to seek her rights amongst other wives within the household. Whereas the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was just between his wives in terms of dwelling, clothing, food and drink. He was keen in doing so, because injustice was from the remnants of the pagan era. In support to this, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “Whenever the messenger of Allah intended to travel, he would setup a draw between his wives. Whoever drew a winning lot, he would take her with him for the journey”.

Anas ibn Maalik, may Allah be pleased with him, says: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had nine wives. When he allocates visitation nights among them, he would end up with the first wife only one day in nine. They used to gather each night in the dwelling of the one whose turn it is for visitation. He was once in the dwelling of Aisha, when Zainab came in. He stretched his hand towards her, she said: this is Zainab. He then withdrew his hand.”
