Episode 12: By your leave we reached the morning
His saying (peace and blessing be upon him) in the Statement: "By your leave we reached the morning" means: by your grace, assistance and mercy we have reached the morning. This is also meant for the supplication “By your leave we reached the evening”.
His statement (peace and blessings be upon him): "by Your leave we live and die", meaning: Our condition will always be like this under all conditions and at all times. This is in all our movements and all of our affairs. Surely, we only existed because of Allah. Allah alone is the supporter and all affairs are in His hand. We cannot suffice without Him for even the blinking of an eye.
This statement shows great reliance upon Allah, and seeking refuge with Him as well as recognition of His bounties in a way that increases one's faith and certainty. It also surely strengthens one's connection with Allah, the Almighty.
His statement in the Statement: "…unto You is our Resurrection", meaning: the returning on the Day of Judgment, by sending mankind from their graves and giving them life after death. And his statement: '…and unto You is our return," means: the convergence and return, just like Allah says in the Qur'an: “Surely to your Lord is the return”.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made his statement: ‘to You is our resurrection’ in the morning, and his statement: ‘unto You is our return’ in the evening, giving attention to the different occasions. That's because waking up in the morning is similar to the Resurrection after death. Since sleep is referred to as the minor death, to wake up from it would be similar to Resurrection after death, Allah the Almighty says: “It is Allah that takes the souls (of men) at death; and those that die not (He takes) during their sleep: those on whom He has passed the decree of death, He keeps back (from returning to life), but the rest He sends (to their bodies) for a term appointed verily in this are Signs for those who reflect”.
Sleeping is similar to death after life. Because the person goes to sleep in it, sleep that is likened to death. Thus the ending of both invocations really comes to shape with the aforementioned meanings. What clarifies this is what was authenticated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he used to say when waking up: "All praise belongs to Allah who gave us life after death, and unto Him is our return". Thus, sleep was referred to as death and waking up as living after death.
