Episode 13: The supplication which was taught to Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq 1/2

These are some more morning and evening blessed invocations, and beneficial supplications, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq (may Allah be pleased with him), while instructing him with words he should say every morning and evening. At-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood and others, narrated that which was authenticated by Al-Albani, may Allah have mercy on him, from the Statement of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him: that Abu Bakr Al-Siddeeq, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "Oh Messenger of Allah! Instruct me with words, which I should say every morning and night. He (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed to say: ‘O Allah, Maker of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen as well as that which is open, the Lord and Sovereign of all things, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I take refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil and the devil and association with him”. And in another narration: “…or that I commit a wrong against myself or bring it upon a Muslim”. He said: “say it when you wake up in the morning and at eves, and when you regain your bed”.

This is an important supplication, recommended for the Muslim to say in the morning, the evening and when going to sleep. It consists of seeking refuge with Allah and seeking shelter with Allah the Almighty from all evils, from all sources and causes of evil and their consequences. He started it with great implorations of Allah, the Owner of Exaltation and Majesty, mentioning some of His beautiful names and noble attributes, which illustrate the supremacy of Allah and His perfection. He implored Him as being “the Maker of the heavens and earth”, i.e: the Creator, Designer and Originator according to no previous model. That He is “the Knower of the unseen and that which is open”, i.e: that nothing is hidden from Him. He is All Knowing about that which escapes human perception, and that which is apparent to them. The unforeseen for Him is open, the secret for Him is overt and His knowledge, Almighty, covers everything. He implored Him as being “the Lord of everything and its Sovereign”; nothing steps out of His Lordship, and He is the Sovereign over everything. He is the Owner of all things, Glorified be He, Lord of the Universe and King of all creation. He then announced His Oneness and submitted to Him in servitude. That's because He is the one deserving worship, none truly deserves to be worshipped except Him. Thus he said: "I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You." This came in the beginning of the supplication, by which the servant of Allah expresses his destitution and need of his Lord. This is also an acknowledgement of Allah's greatness and magnificence. And it shows faith in the glorious Names of Allah and His gracious Attributes.
