Of the great invocations, which the Prophet (peace be upon him) exhorted those who go to sleep to say, is the supplicated reported by Muslim in his Sahih from the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to command us when we go to our bed, we should say: "O Allah, the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne. Our Lord, and the Lord of everything, the Splitter of the grain of corn and the date stone (or fruit kernel), the Revealer of Torah, Injil (Bible) and Criterion (the Holy Qur'an). I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything You are to seize by the forelock (You have perfect control over it). O Allah, You are the First, there is naught before You and You are the Last and there is naught after You, and You are Evident and there is nothing above You, and You are Innermost and there is nothing beyond You. Remove the burden of debt from us and make us rich after poverty." [Reported by Muslim No. (2713)].
It is a great supplication which is better for a Muslim to keep to every night when he goes to bed. It contains great meanings and invocations to Allah with His Great Lordship to everything: To the seven heavens, the seven earths, and the Magnificent Throne. The invocations also seek help with the revelation of Allah's Glorious book to protect man with Allah's Care and Tender against all evils. It also contains invocation to Allah with some of His great Names which indicate His Perfection, Glory, Greatness, and Encompassment of everything to remove debts from man and make him rich after poverty.
As for his saying: "O Allah, the Lord of the Heavens and the Lord of the Earth and Lord of the Magnificent Throne," it means: O creator of these great beings and its Originator from nonentity. Moreover, he mentioned these creatures in particular because of their greatness, magnitude, and they contain amazing signs refer to the perfection of their Creator and the greatness of their Originator; otherwise all creatures whether small or big contain a clear sign to the perfection of the Creator (Glory be to Him). Therefore, he ended this invocation with his saying: "Our Lord, and the Lord of everything," this a generalization after specification so as a person not to think that the matter is only connected with what has been mentioned.
As for his saying: "The Lord of the Magnificent Throne," it contains a reference to the greatness of Allah's Throne which is the greatest creature. It was reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: "Allah's Chair in compare to Allah's Throne is like an iron ring that was thrown in a desert." The Hadith was graded as authentic by Al Albany in As-Silsilah As-Sahihah No. (109) in regard of its ways of narration. If this creature is of that greatness, glory, and vastness, how would be its Creator and Originator (Glory be to Him).
As for his saying: "the Splitter of the grain of corn and the date stone (or fruit kernel)," it means: the one who splits the grain and date stone to grow trees and plants because plants are either trees growing from stones or plants growing from grains or seeds. Allah (Glory be to Him) for the perfection of His power and the beauty of His Creation is the One who causes that hard dry grain or seed, which does not grow or increase, to split and grow plants and big trees. This is a great amazing sign for the perfection of the Creator and the greatness of the Creator (Glory be to Him). Allah (may He be Exalted) says: "Verily, it is Allâh Who causes the seed-grain and the fruit-stone (like date-stone) to split and sprout. He brings forth the living from the dead, and it is He Who brings forth the dead from the living. Such is Allâh, then how are you deluded away from the truth?" [Surat Al An`am: 95].
As for his saying in this invocation: "the Revealer of Torah, Injil (Bible) and Criterion (the Holy Qur'an)," it contains invocation to Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) who revealed these great Scriptures which contain guidance, success, and happiness to the people in this world and in the Hereafter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) singled out these three Scriptures because they are the greatest Scriptures Allah revealed and mentioned them in chronological order where he first mentioned the Torah that was revealed to Moses (peace be upon him), then the Bible which was revealed to Jesus (Peace be upon him), then the criterion (the Glorious Qur'an) which was revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him).
This is a proof that these books contain the words of Allah and that they were revealed by Allah (Glory be to Him), and they were not created, therefore, the Prophet distinguished between them and creatures. When he mentioned the creatures, he said: "Lord" and "Splitter," but when he mentioned Allah's Speech and Revelation, he said: "Revealer".
This is a refutation to the heretics and the people of desires and whims who say that the words of Allah are created, may He be Exalted of what they say, Glorified is Allah above all that they attribute to Him!
