From the Adhkar (invocations and Remembrances said at certain times on a regular basis) which is permissible for a Muslim to recite upon waking up from sleep is what was authentically reported in Sunan At-Tirmidhy from the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person wakes up, he should say: Praise be to Allah Who gave health to my body and returned to me my soul and enabled me to remember Him." [Al Albany graded it as good in Sahih Al Jami` (No. 329)].
This invocation contains praising Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) for giving health to the body and for protecting it from diseases. It also contains praising to Him for returning the soul to a person to increase his obedience and worship Him frequently, therefore he said: "And enabled me to remember Him," i.e., helped me to achieve that. The meaning of enabled me is: Giving me the proper means and facilitated everything to me because this ability is divided into two things: The universal ability according to [means and physical condition] and the religious ability [depends on the will of Allah]. It is known that Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) granted permission to all His Servants to mention and obey Him, however He (Glory be to Him) did not allow that in terms universal ability except for those whom He granted faith, guided them to Islam, and granted them success to do good deeds. Accordingly, those whom Allah guided to mention Him are more honored and more successful with goodness; and this is from the greatest bounties and favors which deserve praising and thanking Allah. Therefore, it is permissible for a Muslim to praise Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) for this great blessing and thank Him (Glory be to Him) for this gift and excellence.
Dear brother, contemplate! The one who gives permission of Adhkar is Allah and the one who benefits from Adhkar is the person and the one who rewards for Adhkar is Allah. The bounty of Allah (Glory be to Him) is ample because He grants bounties to His Servants then rewards them, so thanks to Allah.
In general, what should a Muslim do when waking up from sleep is to mention Allah, perform ablution, and offer Salah so as his day be good, to be active, of high spiritual energy, be keen to goodness, to be free of indolence, and free of wickedness. Al Bukhari and Muslim reported in their Sahih on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Satan puts three knots at the back of the head of any of you if he is asleep. On every knot he reads and exhales the following words: The night is long, so stay asleep. When one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone; and when one performs ablution, the second knot is undone, and when one performs Salah, the third knot is undone and one gets up energetic with a good heart in the morning; otherwise one gets up lazy and with a mischievous heart." [Sahih Al Bukhari No. 1142 and Sahih Muslim No. 776].
It was reported in Musnad Imam Ahmad from the Hadith of Jabir ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "There is no male or female but Satan ties a rope with three knots at his head when he goes to sleep. However, when one wakes up and remembers Allah, one knot is undone. When he stands up and performs ablution, another knot is undone, and when he performs Salah, all three knots are undone." [Al Albany graded it as authentic in Sahih Al Targhib No. (614)].
Those two Hadiths indicate that Satan ties three knots at the head of a person when he goes to bed then says at every knot: "The night is long, so stay asleep" to make him lazy and do not wake up for Salah. However, when a person praises his Lord, one knot is undone and if he stands up to perform ablution, the second knot is undone. When a person performs ablution, all the three knots are undone, laziness is gone, his spiritual energy will go high, he will feel good, and became active and keen for goodness because he got rid of the knots of Satan, refused heedlessness and forgetfulness, and won the pleasure of the Most Gracious.
