Of the useful Adhkar (invocations and Remembrances said at certain times on a regular basis) for the one who has a nightmare and cannot sleep because of worry or fright is to say: "I seek refuge with the perfect Words of Allah from His Anger and His Punishment, and the evil of His People, and from the evil insinuations of devils and from their presence (at death)."
Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, and others reported from the Hadith of `Abdullah ibn `Amr ibn Al-`Aas (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When someone wakes up from sleep due to terror, he should say: I seek refuge with the perfect Words of Allah from His Anger and His Punishment, and the evil of His People, and from the evil insinuations of devils and from their presence (at death). Then nothing can harm him." [Al Albany graded it as good in Sahih Al Jami` (No. 701)].
Imam Ahmad reported in his Musnad from Al Walid ibn Al Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) I find terror in myself. He said: When you go to sleep, say: I seek refuge with the perfect Words of Allah from His Anger, His Punishment, and the evil of His people, and from the evil insinuations of devils and from their presence (at death). Then nothing will harm you or nothing harmful will approach you." [Al Albany mentioned this Hadith in the authentic Hadiths of Al Kalim At-Tayyib book (p. 41)].
Imam Malik reported in Al Muwatta' from Yahya ibn Sa`id that he said: I was informed that Khalid ibn Al Walid said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): I have nightmares during sleep. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: Say: I seek refuge with the perfect words of Allah from His Anger, His Punishment, and the evil of His People, and from the evil insinuations of devils and from their presence (at death)." [Al Muwatta' No. (2737) and As-Silsilah As-Sahihah, No. (264)].
Ibn As-Sunny reported in the book of `Amal Al Yawm wa Al-Laylah from Muhammad ibn Al Munkadir that he said: A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to complain about nightmares he sees in sleep. Thereupon, he (the Messenger) said: "When you go to sleep, say: I seek refuge with the perfect Words of Allah from His Anger and His Punishment, and from the evil of His People, and from the evil insinuations of devils and from their presence (at death)." [As-Silsilah As-Sahihah, No. (264)].
This is a great invocation to which the Prophet (peace be upon him) guided the one who has nightmares, fear, and terror due to something bad he sees in sleep. Therefore, a person should say this invocation to push away terror, to feel tranquility, sleep well, and ward off fear and terror. Moreover, it is a great supplication in which a person declares his need to Allah to protect him from His Anger, Punishment, the evil of His People, from the insinuations of Satan, and that they come to a person whether in his sleep or in all his conditions.
