Episode 7: The master way of asking for forgiveness from Allah (2-3)

    After that he sought refuge in Allah, the Glorious one from the evil that results from any shortcomings in showing thankfulness for bounties or falling into sins. That's because he recognizes the constant bounties of Allah, who always gives and bestows His favors upon the creation. He admits what may befall as a result of a person’s sins and disobedience. Then, he asks Allah for forgiveness from all of that, recognizing that none forgives sins except Him the glorified one.

    This is the ultimate perfection of what should be in a supplication. That's why it is the greatest form of seeking forgiveness, most virtuous and most complete in meanings necessitating forgiveness of sins. And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the beginning of the supplication: "Oh Allah" are words only used properly when seeking something.

    His saying: You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave. In them is humility, submission and humbling oneself to Allah. It shows faith in the Oneness of Allah and in his Lordship and Divinity. So, his saying: You are my Lord, meaning: I don't have a Lord and a Creator other than You. The Lord is the Owner, the Creator, the Provider of sustenance and the Controller of the affairs of His creation. Thus, this is an affirmation of the Oneness of Lordship. That's why he followed it with his statement "You created me", meaning: "You are my Lord that created me, I have nobody as a Creator except You."
    His saying: there is none worthy of worship except You. You alone deserve to be worshipped. This is a fulfillment of the Oneness of Divinity. He then followed it by saying "and I am your servant": I am worshipping you, since you are worthy of worship and none is so except You.

    His saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "… I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can." means: I am upon that which I made a covenant to You about, and promised of faith in You and establishing obedience to You as well as implementing Your orders "according to my ability" i.e. according to ones’ ability, because Allah does not burden a soul except with that which it can bear.

    His saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done." means: I flee to you seeking asylum, Oh Allah! I seek protection with you from evil outcomes and punishments, descending due to what I have done, that the sin remains without being forgiven or that I to return to similar evil deeds.
