Khutbah Title: The Status of Morals in Islam

Khateeb’s Name: Sheykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan As-Sudais

First Khutbah

All perfect praise is due to Allaah The Almighty Who guides to the best words, actions and morals, as none can guide to the best morals except Him The Exalted, and none can save from bad morals except Him. I praise and thank Him The Exalted. I return to Him The Exalted with repentance and seek His forgiveness.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and I bear witness that our Prophet is Muhammad who is His slave and Messenger, who was sent with the right and best morals and the caller to the straight path.

O Allaah, send your prayers and blessing on him, his household and his companions who adopted the morals of the Noble Quran and thus they adhere firmly to its lawful and prohibited matters, carried out its enjoinments, avoided its prohibition, and on those who followed them in righteousness until the Day of Resurrection.

To proceed:

O fellow Muslim, fear Allaah The Almighty and thank Him for the grace of this religion of Islam.

O servants of Allaah, religion of Islam has come with the guidance methodology of humans to reform their beliefs, refine their souls, rectify their morals, reform their societies, organize their relationships, disseminate goodness and virtue among their individuals, fight evil and vice and keep them away from their environments, prevent the outlets of corruption so as not to sneak to its rows. Therefore, the best moral standards, greatest etiquette, sublime values, noble virtues, good characteristics and natures are among the best objectives to which has Islam called. Islam has a unique moral system which the human system has never and even will never attain.

Islam has achieved superiority over all of the human systems. That is because the moral spirit of this religion stems from the essence of the pure belief to raise the status of the man whom Allaah The Almighty has honored and entrusted him with conveying the message, carry out the acts of worship to avoid the difficulties of evil, deviation, spots of vices and corruption, so as to attain the high ranks of goodness and righteousness, greatest degrees of uprightness and success so that peace, love and harmony may prevail society. It aims to disseminate goodness and benefit, and fight evil, misdeeds and corruption.

O nation of Islam, morals in any nation is the title of its glory, symbol of its happiness, crown of its honor, motto of its prestige and sovereignty, secret of its victory and power.

Reform of individuals and nations depends mainly on Emaan (i.e. Faith) and morals. Weak morals indicate weak Faith. If the morals of a nation are destroyed, then there will be no good in this nation, its pillars will be shacked, its matters will be unstable and devastated, and its children will be corrupted. If this really occurred, then the heart of the earth at this time would be better than its face.

O nation of Faith and morals, morals are of great importance in Islam. That is because the Messenger of Islam, peace and blessing be upon him, confined the aim of his mission and reason for his call to a great comprehensive word. It was reported by Al-Bukhaari in At-Taareekh and others that the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “I have only been sent to complete good morals.”

This is the greatest evidence and the most clear argument that the message of Islam has achieved the peak of perfection, virtue and morals in much the same as the example of this nation i.e. Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessing be upon him, was the greatest example and noblest pattern for the best moral standards.

It is sufficient for us to hear the praise of his Lord to him in His Exalted saying: {And indeed, you are of a great moral character.} [Al-Qalam: 4]

Accordingly, the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, the best among people in conduct. ‘Aa’ishah, The Mother of the Believers, may Allaah be pleased with her, gave him a comprehensive description saying as reported by Imam Muslim and others: “The character of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, of was the Quran.”

Is it not more better for this nation which was stricken with the waves of corruption in its different aspect and with the thunders of evil and atheism from all ways and paths to adopt his way, follow his footsteps and adhere firmly to his Sunnah if it really seeks goodness, security, victory and peace?

As his practical biography and actual tradition was a great example in morals, his verbal tradition was also full of the best moral standards, status of those who have them and the great reward granted for them. It spreads widely in Saheehs , Sunan  and the like. Amongst them are the following sayings of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him:

-            “Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, etc.) is the good conduct.”

-            “The best of you is the best among you in conduct.”

-            “The heaviest thing to be placed in the balance of a believing slave on the Day of Resurrection will be good behavior.”

-            “A Believer with good manners gets the same reward as the one who fasts (permanently) and spends his nights in prayer.”

-            “I guarantee a house at the highest part of Paradise to whoever has a good moral character.”

-            The dearest and nearest among you to me on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who is the best in conduct…”

-            “Mix with people with a good attitude.”

Moreover, when the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, was asked about that which will admit most people to Paradise. He, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Fear of Allaah and a good attitude.”

Morals were the most prominent character in the biography of the first generation of the righteous predecessors of this nation. They have paid great attention to them in words, actions and conducts.

Al-Hasan, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said describing the good morals as having a happy cheerful face, doing what is good and right and removing harm.

Also, ‘Abdullaah ibn Al-Mubaarak, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “The characteristics of good conduct are three: to shun all that is forbidden, seek what is lawful, and spend amply on one’s dependents.”

Some other said: “Having a company of a disobeying person who has good moral character is better for me than having a company of worshiper who has bad morals.”

It was also said regarding the sings of the one who has good attitude: “He is the one who has great shyness, does not cause harm, is greatly righteous, has truthful tongue, speaks little, works much, has just few sins, is less curious, is dutiful to his parents, maintains the ties of kinship, solemn, patient, grateful, satisfied, forbearing, loyal, chaste, does not insult, nor slander, nor remind of his generosity, nor backbite, nor lie, nor cheat, nor betray, nor hasty, nor hate, nor envy, nor stingy, nor arrogant, has a cheerful face, loves and hates for the Sake of Allaah The Almighty, wise in matters and powerful in what is right.

Actually, this is just a drop in the ocean from the characteristics and morals of the faithful people that filled The Noble Book of Allaah The Almighty and Sunnah of His Messenger, peace and blessing be upon him.

My fellow Muslim, after all of this, let us contemplate our current morals, our conduct with ourselves, family and Muslim brothers.

Really, the current condition of this matter is very bitter and distresses us. Many people; men, women, young and old, have kept away from the morals of the Noble Quran while the enemies of Islam became active in spreading the moral occupation that is concentrated through different means and multiple forms in the societies of Muslim and among their families.  Corruption and immoralities prevailed. Evil deeds and violations spread. Bad morals dominated. Shyness became little in the conduct and relationships of a lot of people.

O nation of the Noble Quran and Sunnah, is there any return to such good morals?

O young people of Islam, is there any wakefulness that can guide to the best moral standards, keep away bad morals and misdeeds?

O Muslim sisters, is there any return to adhering firmly to the right religion through upholding to Hijaab (veil), chastity, modesty, decency, and keeping away from mixing with men, Tabarooj (i.e. impermissible exposure of women's adornment), wanton display of beauty, and less bashfulness?

O nation of Islam, is there any truthful return to the morals of Islam in the different aspect of our life?

This is the wish and hope and we have to be truthful, work hard and Allaah is the One Whose help we seek.

O Allaah, Guide us to the best of characters for none can guide to it other than You, and deliver us from the worst of characters for none can deliver us from it other than You.

O Allaah, guard us against the bad morals, words, deeds, and desires for verily, You are All-Hearer, All-Knower, All-Responsive to supplication.

These are my words and I seek Allaah's forgiveness for myself, you and all Muslim people from every sin. You also should seek His forgiveness for He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Second Khutbah

All perfect praise is due to Allaah The Almighty for His Graces. All perfect thanks are due to Him for His Favors and Blessings.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, who worshiped his Lord in his good and bad times.

O Allaah, send your prayers and blessing on him, his household, his companions, and his followers.

To proceed:

O servants, fear Allaah The Almighty and adhere strictly to the virtuous morals of Islam, beware of getting affected by the bad morals of non-Muslims, get yourself accustomed to adopting the best moral standards for soul is the source of them. From it comes the virtue by the guidance of Allaah The Almighty, from it vices occur. If it adopts the methodology of the belief and Emaan and follows the way of piety and righteousness, then it will be adorned with the best morals. If it deviates from the way of truth and keeps away from it, it will surely fall in all forms of destructions and sink in all forms of corruption and sins. From this emerges the role of parents, teachers and instructors in educating and raising the generations of Muslims on the virtuous morals and keeping them away from the bad morals so that they may benefit themselves, their country and their nations.

O you, may Allaah have mercy upon him, ask Allaah The Almighty to send His peace and blessings upon the granted mercy and complete grace; our Prophet, leader, and best example, Muhammad ibn ‘Abdulllaah.  Allaah The Almighty has ordered us to send peace and blessings upon him saying (what means): {Indeed, Allaah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allaah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allaah to grant him] peace.} [Al-Ahzaab: 56]

O Allaah, send Your peace and blessings on our Prophet Muhammad, and be pleased with his Rightly-Guided Caliphs, all his Companions, their followers, those who followed them in righteousness until the Day of Resurrection, and all of us with them, out of Your beneficence, and mercy; indeed You are the Most Merciful.

O Allaah,  Give honor to Islam and to the Muslims!

O Allaah,  Humiliate polytheism and the polytheists!

O Allaah, destroy the enemies of the religion!

O Allaah, Protect Your religion, and make this country secure and safe and all other Muslim countries.

O Allaah, Grant us security in our homelands and reform our leaders. O Allaah, Guide our leaders and make them seek Your pleasure through their work and grant them the righteous supporters.

O Allaah, make for this nation a good condition in which the people who obey you will be honored and the people who disobey you will be humiliated, in which good will be enjoined and evil will be prohibited!

O Allaah, support our brothers who strive for Your Sake!

O Allaah, render them successful in all destinations and grant them victory; indeed You are the Most Merciful!

O Our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

O servants of Allaah, Indeed, Allaah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.

Finally, remember Allaah The Almighty and He will surely remember you, thank Him for His graces and He will increase you, and know that the Remembrance of Allaah is greater. And Allaah knows that which you do.
