Khutbah Title: Amongst the Sunan of Every Day and Night

Khateeb’s Name: Sheykh Saalih ibn Muhammad Aal Taalib

Makkah Al-Mukarramah - Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

First Khutbah :

To proceed:

The advice of Allaah The Almighty to both the early and later generations is to fear Him The Exalted, saying (what means): {And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear Allaah.} [An-Nisaa’: 131] .

He The Exalted also says (what means): {O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.} [Al-Ahzaab:70 - 71]

Whoever reforms his inner intentions Allaah The Almighty will reform his outer actions, ease his matter and make all creation love him. Pay much heed for the matter of reforming the inner intentions for if they are corrupt the good outer actions will avail nothing.

My fellow Muslim, what Muslim should really car in his daily life is acting upon the Sunnah of the Messenger, peace and blessing be upon him, whether they are words, actions, motions and motionless until he lead all of his life according to the Sunnah of the Messenger, peace and blessing be upon him, from the morning until the evening. As we are in the time that has a lot of those who claim the love of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, we will apply the verse of trial to such a claim; Allaah The Almighty says (what means): {Say, [O Muhammad], “If you should love Allaah , then follow me, [so] Allaah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allaah is Forgiving and Merciful.”} [Aal-‘Imraan: 31]

The status of any believer is regarded and considered according to his adherence to the footsteps of the Messenger, peace and blessing be upon him. The more one fulfills of the Sunnah, the more he will be honored and praised by Allaah The Almighty. Sticking to the Sunan of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, is a kind of protecting obligations and enjoinments. It is a form of increasing rewards and attaining perfection. It is the honor of following the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, beauty of imitation and life of consciousness. Thus, desires will not go astray and the love of Allaah The Almighty will be acquired. Allaah The Almighty says in the Hadeeth Qudsi : “My slave keeps drawing near to me by means of supererogatory acts of worship until I love Him.”

My fellow Muslim, the following are some of the Sunan of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, for every day and night. Whoever uphold to them, Allaah The Almighty will protect him and get the degrees of righteousness and guidance until he reaches Paradise. We should learn and teach these Sunan. We should also recommend them to our families and relatives.

O servants of Allaah, real Muslim individual follow the footsteps of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, and act upon his Sunan from the moment he goes to his bed as the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, used to do. He, peace and blessing be upon him, used to perform Wudoo’ (i.e. ablution) before sleeping and hold his hands together and blow into them, and recite into them Qul Huwa Allaahu Ahad (Say, "He is Allaah, [who is] One) , Qul a’oothu bi rabb il-falaq ( Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak)  and Qul a’oothu bi rabb in-naas (Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind) . Then he would wipe them over whatever he could of his body, starting with his head and face and the front of his body, and he would do that three times. [Reported in Saheeh Al-Bukhaari]

Also, he, peace and blessing be upon him, used to recite Aayat Al-Kursi  and said: “Whoever recites it will remain under the protection of Allaah and no Shaytaan (i.e. devil) will be able to approach him until the morning.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari]

He also used to say: Bismika Rabbee wadha‘tu janbee, wa bika ’arfa‘uhu, fa’in ’amsakta nafsee farhamhaa, wa ’in ’arsaltahaa fahfathhaa, bimaa tahfathu bihi ‘ibaadaka-as-saaliheen (With Your Name my Lord, I lay myself down; and with Your Name I rise. And if my soul You take , have mercy on it , and if You send it back then protect it as You protect Your righteous slaves).” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

And say thrice: “Allaahumma qini ‘adhaabaka yawma tab’ath ‘ibaadaka (O Allaah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your slaves), [Reported by Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi] One should say this when he puts his right hand under his right cheek as the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, used to do.

One should also sleep on his right side and say: “Subhaanallaahi, Walhamdu lillaahi, -Wallaahu ’Akbar (Glory is to Allaah (thirty-three times in Arabic), praise is to Allaah (thirty-three times), Allaah is the Most Great (thirty-four times).” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

One also should recite the last two verses of Soorat Al-Baqarah at night, beginning from the saying of Allaah The Almighty: {The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers…} [Al-Baqarah: 285: 286] to the end of the two verses for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Whoever recites them at night, they will suffice him.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

If one wakes up, he should wipe the sleep from his face with his hand. Imam An-Nawawi and Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon them, stated the recommendation of this for the Hadeeht that reads: “The Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, woke up and started wiping the sleep from his face with his hand.” [Reported by Muslim]

Then one should supplicate Allaah The Almighty saying: “When he woke up from sleep he would say: “Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi ahyaana ba’d ma amaatana wa ilayhi al-nushoor (Praise be to Allaah Who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and unto Him is the resurrection).” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari]

Also, it was narrated that when the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, got up during the night, he would clean his mouth thoroughly with the Siwaak .” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

O servants of Allaah, there are Sunan for entering the restroom (bathroom/toilet). Amongst them are: One should enter with his left foot first, and exit with his right foot first. As for the invocation of entering the restroom, it is “(Before entering) Allaahumma ’’innee ’a‘oothu bika minal-khubthi walkhabaa’ith (O Allaah, I seek protection in You from the male and female evil spirits).” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

When leaving the restroom, one should say:  “Ghufraanaka (I seek Your forgiveness).” [Reported by all compliers of Sunnan other than An-Nasaa‘i]

There are Sunan for Wudoo’ that we should learn and be keen on applying them. Amongst these Sunan are that one should be moderate in using water for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, used to perform Wudoo’ with a Mudd  (which equals 0,688 litre) of water. [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Then one should pray two Rak‘ahs after Wudoo’ for the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Whoever does Wudoo’ as I have done it, then prays two Rak‘ahs in which he focuses completely on his prayer, his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, also said in another variant narration: “…he will be among the people of Paradise.” [Reported by Imam Muslim from ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Aamir, may Allaah be pleased with him]

Amongst the other great Sunan is Siwaak. The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Were it not that it would cause hardship for my Ummah  (i.e. Islamic nation), I would have commanded them to use the Siwaak for every Wudoo’.”” [Reported Al-Bukhaari], and in As-Sunnan the (for every prayer).

Siwaak is recommended for all five prayers, stressed supererogatory prayers, prayer of Dhuha, Witr, and entering home.  It was reported that ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, said: “When the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessings be upon him, entered his house, the first thing he would do was use Siwaak.” [Reported by Muslim]

Also, it is recommended for one to use Siwaak at reciting Quran, changing of the smell of the mouth, waking up from sleeping, and at performing every Wudoo’. The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “The Siwaak purifies the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.” [Reported by Imam Ahmad]

O servants of Allaah, there are Sunan to be done when getting dressed. Amongst them are that one should say: “Bismillaahi (In the Name of Allaah)”, whether when getting dressed or undressed. An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: It (i.e. Bismillaahi (In the Name of Allaah)) is recommended to be recited in all deeds. When the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, put on a garment, shirt, Ridaa’ (i.e. upper cloth) and turban, he would then say: “Allaahumma lakal-hamdu ’Anta kasawtaneehi, ’as’aluka min khayrihi wa khayri maa suni‘a lahu, wa ’a‘oothu bika min sharrihi wa sharri ma suni‘a lahu (O Allaah, praise is to You. You have clothed me. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it has been made for, and I seek Your protection from the evil of it and the evil of what it has been made for.” [Reported by Abu Daawoood and At-Tirmithi]

One should also begin putting on his clothes with his right hand for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When you clothe yourself, begin with your right side.” [Reported by At-Tirmithi, Abu Daawoood, Ibn Maajah with an authentic Isnaad ] The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “If you want to wear your shoes, start with the right foot and if you want to take it off, start with the left. Or you should either wear them both at the same time, or take them both off.” [Reported by Muslim]

My fellow Muslim, there are also Sunnan for entering the home. An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “It is recommended to say Bismillaahi [In the Name of Allaah] and make a great deal of remembering Allaah The Almighty and give Salaam i.e. say (Asslamu Alaykum) for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When a man enters his house, and mentions Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, when he enters and when he eats, the Shaytaan says: ‘You have no place to stay and no dinner.”  [Reported by Muslim]

Also, one should mention the supplication of entering the home for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Allaahumma as’aluka khayr Al-Mulaj wa khayr Al-Makhraj; Bismillaahi walajnaa, wa bismillaahi kharajnaa, wa ‘alaa Rabbinaa tawakkalnaa [O Allaah! I ask Thee for good both when entering and when going out; In the Name of Allaah we enter, in the Name of Allaah we leave, and upon our Lord we depend), then say As-Salaamu ‘Alaykum to those present]” [Reported by Abu Daawood]

This will make one experience trust in Allaah The Almighty in his going in and out from the house. In this way, one will have a continuous relationship with Allaah The Almighty. Moreover, amongst the other Sunan of entering the home is Siwaak as it was reported in Saheeh of Imaam Muslim. Also, saying peace to those who are present in the house for Allaah The Almighty says (what means): {But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah , blessed and good.} [An-Noor: 61]

When leaving the home one should say: Bismillaahi, tawakkaltu ‘alallaahi, wa laa hawla wa laa quwwata ’ illaa billaah (In the Name of Allaah, I have placed my trust in Allaah, there is no might and no power except by Allaah),  it will be said to him: You are taken care of and you are protected and guided, and the devils will move away from him.” [Reported by At-Tirmithi and Abu Daawood]

O servants of Allaah, also there are Sunan for going to the mosque. Amongst them are going early to it for the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “If the people knew the reward for pronouncing the Athaan (i.e. call to prayer) and for standing in the first row (in congregational prayers) and found no other way to get that except by drawing lots they would draw lots, and if they knew the reward of the Thuhr prayer (in the early moments of its stated time) they would race for it (go early) and if they knew the reward of ‘Ishaa’ and Fajr prayers in congregation, they would come to offer them even if they had to crawl.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Amongst the other Sunan is reciting the supplication of going to the mosque with the known supplication and also proceeding to offer prayer with calmness and solemnity, the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When you hear the Iqamaah (i.e. immediate call to prayer), proceed to offer the prayer with calmness and solemnity and do not make haste.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari]

It is also recommended that one should say supplication at entering the mosque. The Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When any one of you enters the mosque, let him say: Allaahumma iftah li abwaab rahmatika (O Allaah, open to me the gates of Your mercy), and when he leaves let him say, Allaahumma inni as’aluka min fadlika (O Allaah, I ask You of Your bounty).” [Reported by Muslim]

Abu Daawood and Ibn Maajah reported another narration in which the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “(When any one of you enters the mosque), let him greet the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, with peace, then let him say: (the previous supplication).” Furthermore, Anas ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “It is from the Sunnan that you enter the mosque with your right leg, and leave with your left leg.” [Reported by Al-Haakim] Then one should pray the two Rak‘ah of greeting the mosque for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When any one of you enters the mosque, let him not sit down until he has prayed two Rak’ahs .” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

As for the Sunan of the Athaan, they are five as Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allaah have mercy upon him, mentioned in Zaad Al-Mi‘aad:

Firstly, one should repeat what the Mu’aththin says, except for when he says: Hayya ‘alas-Salaah (hasten to the prayer) and Hayya ‘alal-Falaah (hasten to salvation). Here one should say: Laa hawla wa laa quwwata ’illaa billaah (there is no might and no power except by Allaah).” This recommended act can really make one enter Paradise as it was proved in Saheeh Muslim.

Secondly, after one hears the complete Athaan and repeats it, he should say: “Wa ’anaa ’ash-hadu ’an laa ’ilaaha ’illallaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu wa ’anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa Rasooluhu, radheetu billaahi Rabban wa bil’islaami deenan, wa bi-Muhammadin Rasoolan (I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah alone, Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. I am pleased with Allaah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion and with Muhammad as my Messenger).”  [Reported by Muslim]

Thirdly, After replying to the call of Mu’aththin, one should recite in Arabic Allaah's Blessings on the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him. In this regard, the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When you hear the Mu’ththin, say what he says, then send blessings upon me, for whoever sends blessings upon me, Allaah will send blessings upon him tenfold.” [Reported by Muslim]

Fourthly, after reciting Arabic Allaah's Blessings on the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, one should say the following supplication: Allaahumma Rabba haathihid-da ‘watit-taammati wassalaatil-qaa’imati, ’aati Muhammadanil-waseelata walfadheelata, wab ‘ath-hu maqaamam-mahmoodanil-lathee wa‘adtahu (O Allaah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer. Grant Muhammad the intercession and favor, and raise him to the honored station You have promised him.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari]

The fruit of this is that whoever says this, intercession of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, will be permissible for him.

Fifthly, one should supplicate Allaah for himself and ask Him from His generosity for invocation during this time is responded and not rejected because the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Say as they say i.e. Mu’aththineen (those who pronounce the call of the prayer) and if you finished it then ask (Allaah The Almighty) and surely you will be given.” [Abu Daawood, Al-Haafith deemed it Hasan (good) Hadeeth and Ibn Hibaan deemed it Saheeh (authentic) Hadeeth]

O Allaah, help us to follow the Sunan of Your Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, and include us among his followers who adhere firmly to his guidance and follow his footsteps. O Allaah, make us attend to the Hawdh (the Cistern) and gather us in his group and grant us his intercession. O Allaah, Ameen.

Second Khutbah

All perfect praise is due to Allaah , Lord of the worlds - The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful, Sovereign of the Day of Recompense. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allaah alone, Who has no partner, The Clear Truth; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him, his household, and all of his companions.

To proceed:

My fellow Muslim, do you want a house in Paradise? Let us listen to the following Hadeeth in which the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Whoever performs twelve Rak‘ahs of the Sunnah (supererogatory) prayer every day, Allaah will build for him a house in Paradise. Or (a house in Paradise will be built for him).” [Reported by Muslim]

They are four: four Rak‘ahs before Thuhr, two Rak‘ahs after Thuhr, two  Rak‘ahs after Maghrib, two Rak‘ah after Ishaa’, and two Rak‘ah before Fajr.

Amongst the virtuous Sunan is Dhuha (forenoon) prayer: It was narrated that Abu Hurairah, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “My friend (the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him) advised me to do three things, these are: To fast three days every month, to offer the Dhuha prayer, and to offer Witr before sleeping.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

The  minimum of it is two Rak‘ahs. The maximum is eight Rak‘ahs and it was also said: There is no maximum limit for it.

Praying at night is really of great value. In this regard, the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “The best fasting after Ramadaan is the month of Allaah Al-Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is prayer at night.” [Reported by Muslim]

There are recommended acts before and after prayer and the Athkaar  that are recited after it and the Athkaar of every day and night, and morning and night.

My fellow Muslim, amongst the other Sunan that we have to circulate is spreading the greeting of Salaam (peace) the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, was asked: “What is the best thing in Islam?” He said, “Feeding others and giving the greeting of Salaam to those whom you know and those whom you do not know.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

It is recommended for the one who wants to leave some people to recite the words of the greeting of Salaam fully for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “When one of you comes to an assembly, he should give a salutation and if he feels inclined to get up, he should give a salutation, for the former is not more of a duty than the latter.” [Abu Daawood and At-Tirmithi]

Smile is actually a recommended act for the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Do not think little of any act of kindness, even if it is greeting your brother with a cheerful countenance” and “Your smiling at your brother is an act of charity.” [Reported by Muslim]

Shaking hands: In this effect, the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “There are no two Muslims who meet and shake hands with one another, but they will be forgiven before they part.” [Reported by all compliers of Sunan other than An-Nasaa’i]

The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, also said: “..and the good word is a charity.” [Reported by Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Allaah The Almighty says (what means): {And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.} [Al-Israa’: 53 ]

O servants of Allaah, there are also some Sunan for eating that are collected in the following Hadeeth in which the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “O young boy, say the name of Allaah and eat with your right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you.” [Reported by Muslim]

Furthermore, praising Allaah The Almighty after eating: “Allaah is pleased with a person who eats some food and then praises Him for it, or who drinks some drink and then praises Him for it.” [Reported by Muslim]

Also, the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, used to say the following supplication after eating: ‘Al-hamdu Lillaahi allahi at’amani haadha wa razaqnihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa laa quwwata (Praise be to Allaah Who has fed me this and provided me with it with no power or strength on my part),’ the benefit of this supplication is that one’s previous sins will be forgiven.” [Reported by Abu-Daawood, At-Tirmithi, Ibn Maajah, and Al-Haafith classed as Hasan (good) Hadeeth]

Also, one should breathe outside the cup i.e. in  drinking in three sips and not drinking the entire drink at once. The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (he used to drink in three gulps). [Reported by Muslim]

Adhere firmly to the Sunan of your Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, and follow his guidance for this will render you winners and successful.

Finally, send peace and blessings of Allaah on the best of mankind i.e. the Prophet Muhammad.

The other day, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iphone and tested to
see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views.
I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!

First of all I would like to say superb blog! I had a quick question that I'd like to

I have had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my ideas
out. I truly do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are
generally lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints?
Thanks!
