It was narrated on the authority of  Ibn ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with them, that the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “Whilst a man was dragging his lower garment out of pride, the earth swallowed him up and he will continue sinking into the earth until the Day of Resurrection.”  (1).

In the narration reported by Abu Hurairah, may Allaah be pleased with him, the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, said: "There was a person who used to walk with pride because of his thick hair and fine mantles. He was made to sink in the earth and he would go on sinking in the earth until the Last Hour would come." (2).

Amongst the lessons drawn from the above-mentioned Hadeeth:

1- Ibn Hajar, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "Al-Qurtubi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said, pride means that one believes that he is totally perfect along with forgetting the Graces of Allaah The Almighty upon him and if he disdains anyone else besides that, then this will be the awful dispraised pride. (3).

2- The bad end of pride and arrogance is that it entails immediate and delayed punishment.

3- This Hadeeth implies a proof of the Torment of the Grave. It is prescribed for every Muslim to seek refuge with Allaah The Almighty from it in every prayer.

4- Al-Maawardi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: "As for pride, it hides good qualities, demonstrates bad ones, makes one get the bad attributes and prevents from doing good deeds. There is no limit for the hatred that arrogance instills in person. There is no limit for ignorance that pride develops in one. Furthermore, it extinguishes the good qualities that are very common and robs the good attributes, not to mention that it wipes away every good deed and destroys every virtue, along with the wrath it stirs up and the envy that it develops. If something is evil to such degree, then Muslim individual should keep himself away from it.
