- Anas ibn Malik narrated: When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) decided to write letters to the Byzantine (Emperor) they (his Companions) told him that they would not read a letter unless it is sealed. Therefore the Prophet (peace be upon him) took a silver ring, as if I am looking at its glitter now in the hand of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) engraved on it (Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). (1)
- Az-Zuhry reported on the authority of Salam from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote the book of Sadaqah (Zakah) but did not give it to his `Ummal (Muslim rulers whom he appointed on tribes and cities) until he died, then it was put with his sword. When the Messenger of Allah passed away, Abu Bakr acted according to it until he died and `Umar did likewise until he died. The book contained these rulings: The Zakah due on a person who owns five camels is one ewe. If they are ten, Zakah is two ewes. If they are fifteen, Zakah is three ewes. If they are twenty, Zakah is four ewes. And if they are twenty five, Zakah is Bint Makhad (a one-year-old she-camel). (2)
- Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn `Amr ibn Hazm reported on the authority of his father from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wrote a letter to the people of Yemen and sent it with `Amr ibn Hazm in which he says: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Prophet Muhammad to Shurahbil ibn `Abd Kulal , Al Harith Ibn `Abd Kulal, and Na`im Ibn `Abd Kulal: The Zakah of the one who has 40 ewe up to 120 is one ewe. If they exceeded 120 up to 200, he should give two ewes as Zakah. If they exceeded 200 up to 300, he should give three ewes as Zakah. If they exceeded that number, he should give one more ewe for each one hundred... (3)
- Ibn `Abbas narrated: When Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was on his death-bed and in the house there were some people among whom was `Umar ibn Al Khattab, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Come, let me write for you a statement after which you will not go astray." `Umar said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him) is seriously ill and you have the Qur'an; so the Book of Allah is enough for us." The people present in the house differed and quarreled. Some said "Go near so that the Prophet (peace be upon him) may write for you a statement after which you will not go astray," while the others said as 'Umar said. When they caused a hue and cry before the Prophet (peace be upon him), Allah's Messenger said (peace be upon him), "Go away! It is not proper to dispute before me." Ibn `Abbas said: "It was very unfortunate that Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) was prevented from writing that statement for them because of their disagreement and noise." (4)
- Narrated Anas: When Abu Bakr sent me to (collect the Zakat from) Bahrain, he wrote to me the following: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. These are the orders for compulsory charity (Zakat) which Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) had made obligatory for every Muslim, and which Allah had ordered His Messenger (peace be upon him) to observe: Whoever amongst the Muslims is asked to pay Zakat accordingly, he should pay it (to the Zakat collector) and whoever is asked more than that (what is specified in this script) he should not pay it; for twenty-four camels or less, sheep are to be paid as Zakat; for every five camels one sheep is to be paid..." (5)

- Mujahid reported on the authority of `Abdullah ibn `Amr who said: "There are two qualities that make me desire life: As-Sadiqah and Al Wahtah. As for As-Sadiqah, it is a sheet that I wrote based on the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). As for Al Wahtah, it was a land that `Amr ibn Al `As gave in charity." (7)

- `Amr ibn Abu Sufyan reported that he heard `Umar ibn Al Khattab saying: "Drive knowledge from the Book of Allah." (8)
- `Ubayd Allah ibn Abu Rafi` said: Ibn `Abbas used to visit Abu Rafi` and say: What has the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) done on such and such day? What has the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) done on such and such day? while he had sheets with him in which he used to record everything. (9)
