Ninth and Tenth Hadeeth
It was narrated that ‘Abbaad ibn Tameem, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported from ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Aasim Al-Maazini, may Allaah be pleased with him, who said: “The Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, was asked about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. The Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, replied: “He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something.” (1).
It was narrated that Umm Qays bint Mihsin Al-Asdiyyah, may Allaah be pleased with her, said: “I brought my young son, who had not started eating (ordinary food) to the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, who took him and made him sit in his lap. The child urinated on the garment of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, so he, peace and blessing be upon him, asked for water and poured it over the soiled (area) and did not wash it.” (2).
It was also narrated that ‘Aa’ishah, may Allaah be pleased with her, said: “A baby was brought to him and he passed water over him (over his garment), so he, peace and blessing be upon him, asked water to be brought and sprinkled it, but he, peace and blessing be upon him, did not wash it.” (3).
Such Hadeeths have several and important issues and we will review them in the following points:
Firstly, as for his saying: “The Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, was asked about a person…”, the one who asked the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, is the narrator himself ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Aasim Al-Maazini, may Allaah be pleased with him, as it was reported in the Saheeh that he asked the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him.
As for his saying: “…who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer...”, it means he is not certain that he have passed wind.”
Secondly, a great Islamic basic principle can be deduced from this Hadeeth on which many of the scientific rulings are based. It is more appropriate for Muslim individual to understand and know how to apply it well. It is: “In principle, all certain things have to remain as they are. One cannot turn from them (i.e. certain things) for mere doubts and uncertainties, whether such doubts are strong or weak as long as it does not reach the degree of certainty. Imam An-Nawawi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “This Hadeeth sets out the principle that things should remain as they are unless one is certain that they have changed; doubt does not affect the status quo.” End quote
According to this basic principle: “If the one who performed ablution has doubt whether he has Hadath (i.e. passing wind or urine or answering the call of nature) or not, he remains in his state of purification until he is certain of having Hadath.”
The same ruling applies to the one who has doubt about the purity of his garment and whether impurity afflicted it or not, the basic principle is that it is pure and so on.
This is a great and very beneficial basic principle. It has important benefits such as Muslim individual worships his Lord in a clear way that is free from all doubts and Wasaawus (i.e. insinuating whispers). Also, it expels devil away from the minds of the person because if one knows that such Wasaawus will not affect him, he will escape and run away.
Thirdly, this Hadeeth indicates that one is not allowed to leave prayer except for clear and certain reason. Moreover, it indicates that the wind that comes out from behind invalidates ablution for the permissibility of leaving prayer is based on its occurrence.
Fourthly, It can be deduced from this Hadeeth that what is meant is being certain i.e. if one becomes certain that his ablution becomes invalid, even if he did not hear a sound nor did have a smell, then his ablution is invalid as long as he is certain of this.
Fifthly, it can also be deduced from the Hadeeth narrated by Umm Qays bint Mihisin the noble manners of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, where the companions, may Allaah be pleased with them, used to bring their children to the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, to get blessings from him and from his supplications. The Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, used to welcome them warmly, treat them nicely and kindly, let them sit on his pure lap, and never get annoyed from what may occur from them such as urine and the like. Therefore, we have to adhere firmly to the role model of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him, and treat our little children in a special way. We should not get annoyed of such acts and deeds. If they do a certain mistake, we should handle this in an appropriate way, following the example of the Prophet, peace and blessing be upon him.
Sixthly, This Hadeeth indicates that if the urine of the boy afflicts a garment, then it can get purified by pouring water over it without washing it. Does this indicate that it is pure or impure? Majority of Muslim scholars are of the opinion that the urine of the boy, even he had not begun to eat food yet, is impure; however, purifying it was made lighten and easy somehow.
All of such rulings are related to the urine of the boy. As for that of the girl, it is obligatory to be washed. That is because Abu Daawood and An-Nasaa’i reported from Abu As-Samaah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allaah, peace and blessing be upon him, said: “A girl's urine should be washed away and a boy's urine should be sprinkled with water.” (4) [Al-Haakim deemed it Saheeh (authentic) Hadeeth]
This Hadeeth refers to the difference regarding the purification of the urine of the boy who had not started eating food yet and the urine of the girl who did not begin to eat food or not. Making the purification of the urine of the boy easy and light is a kind of putting things easy from the Wise Lawgiver for the worshiper. Allaah Knows best.
