It was reported in Sahih Al Bukhari on the authority of Jabir ibn `Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) who said: "Whenever we went up a place we would say, "Allahu-Akbar (i.e. Allah is Greater)", and whenever we went down a place we would say: Subhan Allah." [Sahih Al Bukhari No. 2993].
The wisdom behind pronouncing Takbir when going up a high place is to busy the heart with the glorification of Allah and exalting His Pride, as it pushes away arrogance and pride.
As for pronouncing Tasbih, it negates any defect from Allah or anything that might defect Him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to invoke Allah for those who want to travel with protection, good returning, and easy journey, and he used to commend them with fearing Allah.
It was reported in Sunan At-Tirmidhy on the authority of `Abdullah ibn `Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: "When a man was to set out on a journey, `Abdullah ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) would say to him: "Draw near so that I may bid farewell to you as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to bid farewell to us. (The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say: `Astawdi`ullaha dinaka, wa amanataka, wa khawatima `amalika' (I entrust Allah with your religion, your trust and your last deeds)." [Sunan At-Tirmidhy No. 43 34, and Al Albany (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) graded it as authentic in Sahih Sunan At-Tirmidhy No. 3738].
It was also reported by At-Tirmidhy on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that "A man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), I intend to set out on a journey, so advise me. He (peace be upon him) said: Fear Allah and pronounce Takbir upon rising a high ground. When the man turned away, he (peace be upon him) said: O Allah! Shorten the distance for him and make the journey easy for him." [Sunan At-Tirmidhy No. 3445 and Ibn Majah No. 2771, and Al Albany (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) graded it as authentic in Sahih Sunan At-Tirmidhy No. 2739].
It was also reported by At-Tirmidhy on the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) who said "A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I intend to go on a journey, so supplicate for me. He (peace be upon him) said: May Allah grant you the provision of piety. The man said: Please supplicate more for me. He (peace be upon him) said: May He forgive your sins! The man repeated: Please supplicate more for me. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: May He facilitate for you the doing of good wherever you are." [Sunan At-Tirmidhy No. 3444, and Al Albany (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) graded it as authentic in Sahih Sunan At-Tirmidhy No. 2739].
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to advise those who want to travel to invoke Allah for their families that Allah protects them.
It was reported in `Amal Al Yawm Wa Al Laylah of Ibn As-Sunny on the authority of Musa ibn Wardan who said: "I came to Abu Hurayrah to see him off after I had intended to travel. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: O my nephew, shall I teach you something which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught me to say at farewell? I said: Yes. He said: Say: "Astawdi`ukum Allah Alldhy La Tadi` Wada'i`uh [I entrust you in the hands of Allah whose trust is never misplaced]." Ibn Majah also reported the Hadith on the auhtority of Abu Hurayrah who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw me off saying:... then mentioned the Hadith." [`Amal Al Yawm Wa Al Laylah No. 505 and Sunan Ibn Majah No. 2825, and Al Albany (may Allah bestow mercy on his soul) graded it as authentic in Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah No. 2278].
It was also reported in Al Musnad that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Luqman, the wise, used to say: When Allah undertakes to guard something, He preserves it." [Al Musnad 2/87].
We ask Allah to protect our religion and to guide us all to goodness.
